The Lighting of the Christmas Tree

Christmas Eve at a Swedish manor house. Olga and her husband Liljekrona have gathered their two young sons around the fire, preparing for a quiet holiday celebration. Then a knock at the door: Ruster, a destitute flute playeraddicted to drink, has come seeking shelter. Olga faces a terrible calculus. Protect her children from this ragged stranger or answer the deeper command of Christmas hospitality. As the evening unfolds, old wounds are exposed, family loyalties tested, and the forgotten poor are forced back into consciousness. The lighting of the Christmas tree becomes the symbolic heart of the play, when Ruster is drawn back into the warmth of the family fold. Adapted by Josephine Ludlow Palmer from Selma Lagerlöf's "The Christmas Guest," this 1917 one-act carries the weight of a universal question: what do we owe those who have fallen, and can love truly reach them?
