The Life Record of H. W. Graber: A Terry Texas Ranger, 1861-1865; Sixty-Two Years in Texas

This is the voice of one of the last horsemen of the Confederacy, preserved in plain, unsentimental prose. H.W. Graber arrived in Texas as a German immigrant boy, lost both parents by his teens, and found himself riding with Terry's Texas Rangers by twenty-one, a unit that would bleed from a thousand men at the war's start to barely two hundred by its end. Graber writes without romance about what he witnessed: the brutal cavalry charges, the hunger of long campaigns, the particular loneliness of fighting for a cause while knowing Texas itself would never quite feel like home. His memoir spans sixty-two years in the state, rendering frontier life not as adventure but as endurance. For readers drawn to the American Civil War from the ground up, not from the generals' memoirs but from the men who actually held the reins, Graber offers something increasingly rare: a private record of what it meant to survive.
