The Life of Venerable Sister Margaret Bourgeois

An early 19th-century hagiography of one of North America's most remarkable religious pioneers. Sister Margaret Bourgeois left France in 1641 and arrived in colonial Montreal in 1659, where she founded the Congregation of Notre Dame with nothing but faith and stubborn determination. This text traces her extraordinary journey from her youth in Tours through her years serving the spiritual and material needs of early New France, where she established schools, cared for the sick, and attempted to bring Catholic education to indigenous communities. Written with the reverent admiration of those who saw her as a living saint, the narrative captures both the historical circumstances of Montreal's early colonization and the intimate particulars of one woman's spiritual conviction. The prose reflects the devotional style of its era, yet it preserves invaluable details about early Canadian society, the role of women in building institutions, and the complex encounters between French colonists and Indigenous peoples. For readers interested in the foundations of Canadian education, the history of religious orders in North America, or the extraordinary women who shaped colonial societies against overwhelming odds, this obscure text offers a window into a pivotal moment in North American history.
