The Life of the Right Honourable Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson, Volume 1

This early 19th-century biography captures Horatio Nelson before he became legend. James Harrison, writing close to Nelson's death at Trafalgar, traces the admiral's journey from a sickly Norfolk boy to the bold commander who would revolutionize naval warfare. The text reveals the making of a hero: the familial encouragement from his naval-commander uncle, the childhood signs of daring, and the thirst for adventure that propelled young Horatio onto the decks of warships. Harrison provides both public triumphs and private glimpses, creating a portrait that predates the sanctified mythology surrounding Nelson's name. For readers interested in how heroes are forged, this volume offers an intimate look at the man before he became an icon, complete with the immediacy of an account written while the memory of Nelson's exploits still burned fresh in the national consciousness.
