The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson for Boys and Girls

This 1915 biography introduces young readers to the extraordinary life of the man who gave the world Treasure Island, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and some of the most beloved verses ever written for children. Jacqueline Overton traces Stevenson's journey from a frail Scottish boy, mesmerized by his grandfather's tales of lighthouse engineering and distant seas, to the celebrated author whose imagination transformed adventure into art. The book captures the spirit of a man who refused to let tuberculosis dim his restless curiosity, who sailed across oceans seeking health and inspiration, and who created characters so vivid they have haunted readers for over a century. Written with young readers in mind, the narrative emphasizes the adventurous genes that flowed through the Stevenson family, the same engineering brilliance that built the legendary Bell Rock lighthouse would later fuel young Robert's dreams of pirate treasure and exotic islands. This is both a charming period piece and a genuine introduction to one of literature's most inventive minds, showing how a sickly boy who loved to make up stories became one of the most influential writers in the English language.
