The Life of Midhat Pasha; A Record of His Services, Political Reforms, Banishment, and Judicial Murder

In 1903, a son sat down to clear his father's name. Ali Haydar Mithat had watched Sultan Abdul Hamid II banish Midhat Pasha, the architect of Ottoman reform, to a remote prison in Arabia. He had watched them try the man who had tried to modernize an empire, found him guilty through a sham trial, and strangle him with a rosary. This book is the result: a son's furious, grieving account of Midhat Pasha's life, his political reforms, and his murder by the state he served. It is not neutral history. It is memory as resistance, a first-hand record of what happened to a man who believed an empire could change, and what that belief cost him. The book carries the weight of exile and injustice on every page, and it remains the essential document for understanding both Midhat Pasha's legacy and the brutality of Abdul Hamid's reign. For readers interested in the Ottoman Empire's final decades, in the price of reform, or in how families preserve truth against authoritarian power, this is an indispensable account.
