The Life of Friedrich Nietzsche

This is biography as portraiture, not encyclopedia. Daniel Halévy knew Nietzsche in his final years, and this 1911 account carries the urgency of someone writing while memory remains vivid. He traces the philosopher from the son of a Lutheran pastor haunted by his father's early death, through his brilliant but troubled academic career, to his collapse in Turin and final decade of silence. What emerges is neither saint nor scandal but a man perpetually at war with his own intellect. Halévy is particularly attentive to the formative wounds: the religious upbringing that became both burden and obsession, the estrangement from his sister, the devastating friendship with Lou Andreas-Salomé. The prose has period elegance, occasionally dated in its psychology, but its real value lies in capturing the texture of Nietzsche's life before myth calcified around him. For anyone who has encountered his philosophy and wonders who wrote it, this remains an essential, intimate companion.
