The life of Abdel Kader, ex-sultan of the Arabs of Algeria

In the 1830s and 40s, one man held the French Empire at bay across the Algerian highlands for two decades. Abdel Kader al-Hasani was warrior and mystic, poet and statesman, a Sufi master who commanded armies and won the grudging admiration of his colonial enemies through his strict code of chivalry. Charles Henry Churchill, Britain's consul in Aleppo, crafted this landmark biography from interviews and firsthand accounts, giving us the only substantial English-language portrait of a figure who became a symbol of anti-colonial resistance across the Arab world. The book follows Abdel Kader from his emergence as a religious leader in Mascara through his epic guerrilla campaign, his merciful treatment of Christian prisoners that shocked Europe, his eventual surrender, and his long exile. Churchill writes with evident admiration for his subject, rendering both the drama of war and the interior life of a man who debated philosophy with French officers while his armies bled. This remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the roots of Algerian nationalism and the complex人性 of resistance against empire.
