The Life and Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Volume 2 (of 2)

The death of Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1822 shattered Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. She was twenty-four, mother to a four-year-old son, and already orphaned by her own mother's death in childbirth. This volume traces her descent into grief and her laborious climb back toward purpose. Through her own letters, we witness the desperate search for confirmation of the drowning, the haunting nights in Italy, and the slow, agonizing return to literary work that would sustain her and her child. The correspondence reveals her complex relationships with Byron, Leigh Hunt, and Trelawny, friends who became both comfort and burden in her widowhood. But this is not merely an account of sorrow. It captures Mary's fierce determination to preserve her husband's legacy, to write her own survival, and to navigate the treacherous waters of literary celebrity as a single mother in an era that offered women few alternatives to dependence. The letters crackle with intelligence, wit, and an anguish that still resonates two centuries later.
