The Library of Work and Play: Home Decoration

What if learning to build a house could teach you how to live beautifully? Charles Franklin Warner rooted this guidebook in a remarkable experiment: in 1916, public school students across New England were given a deceptively simple challenge, design and construct a model house from scratch. The result wasn't miniature architecture, it was a revolution in how young people understood the relationship between their surroundings and their daily lives. This isn't a dry manual of decorating tips. It's a manifesto for teaching children that utility and aesthetics aren't enemies, that a well-designed home is a work of art worth making. Warner shows boys and girls working side by side on blueprints and furniture and tiny curtains, learning that beauty isn't a luxury but a skill. The book uses this project as a springboard to explore everything from color theory to furniture placement, from the philosophy of domestic spaces to the practical logic of where you put a window. The book endures as a fascinating artifact for anyone curious about how we once taught young people that making things well and making things beautifully were the same pursuit.
