The Letters of Lord Nelson to Lady Hamilton, Vol II.: With a Supplement of Interesting Letters by Distinguished Characters

These are the private letters of Britain's greatest naval hero, and they reveal a man utterly undone by passion. Written during the Napoleonic Wars, this correspondence between Admiral Horatio Nelson and Emma Hamilton the woman he called 'the wife of my heart' exposes the fault line between national duty and private longing that defined his final years. Nelson writes from aboard his ships with the same tenderness he might bring to a lover's ear, fretting over rumors, confessing his loneliness, dreaming of their home at Merton. Yet the letters also carry the weight of war: updates on naval engagements, hopes for leave, the ever-present knowledge that his glory might befnish at any moment. What emerges is not the monument in Trafalgar Square but a flesh-and-blood man, brilliant and flawed, desperate to be with the woman he loved beyond propriety or reason. For readers drawn to history's human corners, or anyone curious about what heroism costs the person living it, these letters offer an unguarded portrait that no biography can match.
