The Lay of the Sheriff

A wonderfully waspish Victorian verse satire that dissects the ceremonial ridiculousness of provincial English governance. Written in rollicking rhyming couplets, the poem follows a newly appointed sheriff navigating the pomp, pressure, and petty politics of the annual Assizes - those grand court sessions that turned quiet county towns into theaters of judicial theater. Lybbe Powys skewers the social climbing, the nervous importance, the elaborate costumes, and the underlying absurdity of men in silk gowns taking themselves very seriously over matters of local justice. The poem revels in every awkward speech, every nervous rehearsal, every solemn absurdity of civic duty performed by men more comfortable with their own dignity than with the strange theater required to maintain it. It is sharp, affectionate satire: the kind that makes you laugh at Victorian worthies taking themselves extremely seriously, while recognizing that not much has changed in the corridors of small-town power. For readers who love Victorian wit, obscure comic masterpieces, or the peculiar British talent for making fun of themselves.
