The Last Fight of the Revenge

In August 1591, off the Azores, Sir Richard Grenville aboard the Revenge faced a Spanish fleet of fifty-three ships. He could have escaped. He chose to fight. This is the poem that turned that impossible battle into legend. Newbolt writes in rolling, thunderous verses that capture the roar of cannons, the crack of timber, and the grim calculus of men who know they will not see home. Grenville, wounded and dying, is carried below deck still urging his men to fire the guns. The poem pulses with the Victorian mania for imperial glory, yes, but also with something quieter and more enduring: the terror and beauty of men who refuse to yield. It is a poem about what courage costs and why we worship it anyway. Read it and feel the sea swell beneath you.
