The Last Cruise of the Saginaw

In October 1870, the USS Saginaw, a worn Civil War gunboat on a routine survey mission to Midway Atoll, strikes an uncharted reef in the middle of the Pacific. What follows is a harrowing account of men trapped on a tiny island thousands of miles from help, watching their ship break apart piece by piece. George H. Read, who served as the ship's pilot, documents the frantic attempts to salvage supplies, the establishment of a fragile camp, and the desperate fifty-three-day wait for rescue. The narrative captures ordinary men confronting extraordinary circumstances, quarreling over dwindling rations, wrestling with despair, yet finding moments of humor and fellowship amid the vast emptiness of the ocean. It stands as a testament to human endurance and the unbreakable bonds forged when survival depends on mutual reliance. Written by a participant who lived through the catastrophe, the account carries the raw authenticity of firsthand experience, unsentimental, gripping, and deeply human. For readers who hunger for true tales of maritime survival and the quiet heroism of ordinary men against impossible odds.
