Before emojis, before text messages, Victorians spoke in flowers. This 1834 guide catalogs the secret vocabulary that courtship, mourning, and friendship once shared through blooms. Henrietta Dumont's compendium arranges flowers alphabetically, assigning each a meaning - the snowdrop promises hope, the marigold acknowledges grief, the rose declares love in all its varieties. But this isn't merely a dictionary. It's also an anthology of verse, pairing each flower with poems and excerpts that illustrate its emotional resonance. The result is a curious artifact: part botanical reference, part poetry collection, entirely devoted to the proposition that nature speaks. For modern readers, it offers both historical fascination and quiet provocation - what would we say if we could convey an entire sentiment with a single bloom? Who would we send a message to, and what would it mean?
