The Land-War in Ireland: A History for the Times

James Godkin's impassioned 19th-century account reads less like detached history and more like a brief for the defense of an entire nation. Writing with the urgency of a man who believed Ireland's suffering could be healed if only England would acknowledge the wound, Godkin traces the centuries of land confiscation, forced eviction, and systematic exploitation that reduced Irish peasants to a condition he describes with medical precision: a patient whose illness festers because no one will name the cause. This is advocacy history at its most earnest, rooted in Godkin's firsthand observations of the famine's aftermath and the land wars that followed. He writes for an English audience he hoped to convert, laying out the factual case for reform with relentless detail. The result is not merely a historical record but a plea, shaped by the conviction that understanding must precede justice.
