The Korea Review, Vol. 5 No. 5, May 1905

May 1905. Korea stands at the edge of erasure. This issue of The Korea Review captures a nation in its final months of formal independence, documenting the tensions between tradition and modernization, between Korean identity and Japanese expansion. The magazine's pages reveal a society grappling with the opening of the Seoul-Fusan Railway, a physical reminder of Japan's tightening grip. Other articles offer glimpses of everyday life: a journey to Quelpart Island, investigations into traditional remedies like the "Magic Ox-Cure," documenting beliefs and economic hardships in rural Korea. The editorial comment, published as Japan's military victories stack higher, quietly wrestles with what fair governance might look like for a people facing colonization. This is not history as later generations would write it, but history as contemporaries lived it. For scholars, students, and anyone interested in the documents that testify to a nation's struggle for survival, this volume preserves voices that were nearly silenced.
