The Knife-Grinder's Budget of Pictures & Poetry, for Boys and Girls
The Knife-Grinder's Budget of Pictures & Poetry, for Boys and Girls
A charming curiosity from the early 1800s, this illustrated collection gathers whimsical verses meant to delight and instruct the children of another century. The knife-grinder himself calls out from its pages, joined by huxters, barbers, and all manner of bustling market folk. Playful animals populate the verses alongside scenes of daily life, each poem capturing a brief vignette designed to entertain while instilling the values of obedience and proper conduct. The simple rhymes feel worlds away from modern children's literature, yet they possess an undeniable period appeal. This is less a book to read than a window into what occupied and educated young minds two centuries ago: a time when verses taught lessons about behaving, about work, about the small dramas of village and town. For readers drawn to historical artifacts, to the evolution of childhood in print, or to the peculiar charms of forgotten verse, this Budget offers an oddly moving glimpse into yesterday's youth.
