The Knickerbocker, Vol. 57, No. 1, January 1861

January 1861. The Union trembles on the edge of dissolution, and America's intellectuals look to Paris for answers, escape, or perhaps both. This issue of The Knickerbocker, that stalwart New York literary magazine, opens with Henry Tuckerman's extended meditation on Parisian life: a city of cafés and contradictions, where strangers converse in the streets and leisure is elevated to art. Tuckerman parses the French character with an American's mix of admiration and bewilderment, parsing vanity against thrift, high culture against daily commerce. Beyond Paris, this volume gathers the era's finest pens: essays on art and society, verse that moves between sentiment and grandeur, observations that capture a civilization in quiet crisis. The timing is everything. Four months before Fort Sumter, American writers turned their gaze outward, wrestling with questions of who they were by studying who they were not. For readers today, it offers a window into the mind of a nation about to tear itself apart, still capable of elegance, still hungry for the wider world.
