The Katipunan; Or, The Rise and Fall of the Filipino Commune

This book documents one of history's most dramatic revolutionary movements. The Katipunan was a secret society that grew from underground Masonic lodges into a mass movement that nearly overthrew Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Drawing on Spanish government archives, St. Clair reconstructs the clandestine meetings, the ideological debates, and the catastrophic internal fractures that doomed the revolution. The narrative centers on figures like Andrés Bonifacio, the firebrand who ignited the uprising, and Apolinario Mabini, the brilliant theoretician who tried to give it coherent form. This is not celebratory history - it examines how revolutionary ideals curdled into factional violence, how the dream of Filipino independence was betrayed from within even as Spanish troops closed in. For readers interested in anticolonial movements, revolutionary psychology, or the making of modern nations, this early 20th-century study remains essential reading.
