The Journal of Negro History, Volume 7, 1922

In 1922, when Black history was largely absent from academic discourse, The Journal of Negro History emerged as a radical act of preservation and reclamation. This seventh volume contains rigorous scholarship documenting the lives, communities, and institutions that dominant histories had erased: an exhaustive examination of slave society from 1619 through the early 19th century, tracing the emergence and mechanics of American slavery alongside the cultural world enslaved people built; studies of the Negro Baptist Church's evolution as both spiritual refuge and community anchor; and documentation of early African American education in West Virginia. These were not neutral historical accounts. They were interventions into a culture that had every incentive to forget. The scholars here understood they were racing against time, collecting testimony and records before they disappeared. For anyone serious about understanding the full scope of American history, this volume offers what mainstream archives rarely provided: the view from within.
