The Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, Vol. 6: Quebec, 1633-1634

These are the raw, frontline reports from the earliest years of French colonial Quebec, written by Jesuit missionaries in 1633-1634 as they struggled to establish missions among the Huron peoples. Paul le Jeune, the Superior of the mission, documents not just the mechanics of evangelization but the dizzying complexity of Indigenous politics, the delicate negotiations between rival tribes, and the missionaries' own mounting frustrations and partial breakthroughs. The Jesuits were simultaneously observers and participants in a world they barely understood, and their letters home to France reveal as much about European assumptions and anxieties as they do about Indigenous life. This volume captures a pivotal moment: the mission's first serious attempts to build relationships with the Hurons, complicated by intertribal warfare, fear of rival nations, and the constant threat of violence. The documents offer modern readers an invaluable window into early North American history, colonial encounter, and the clash and accommodation between radically different worldviews.
