The Jargon File, Version 4.0.0, 24 Jul 1996

The Jargon File is the legendary lexicon that defined hacker culture, compiled over decades by the programmers, systems wizards, and early internet pioneers who built the digital world. This edition collects thousands of entries documenting the slang, in-jokes, and technical shorthand of the Unix and ARPANET communities, from "foo" and "bar" (the canonical placeholder variables) to "FidoNet" to "ABEND" (abnormal end, the darkly humorous way programmers acknowledge a crashed program). Each definition is both a precise technical explanation and a window into a culture that valued cleverness, precision, and a good hack. What elevates this beyond a simple dictionary is its voice. The hackers who wrote these entries were engineers who wrote poetry in assembly, and it shows. Entries include origin stories, historical context, and the kind of dry wit that defined a generation of programmers who built the infrastructure we now take for granted. This is where much of modern computing's shared vocabulary was forged. Reading it feels like stumbling into a room where the most interesting people in computing are arguing passionately about the correct usage of a term that no one outside the room has ever heard of.
