The Ivory Tower

The Ivory Tower is Henry James's final, unfinished assault on the conscience of American wealth. Set among the glittering mansions of Gilded Age Newport, it follows Graham Fielder as he inherits a vast fortune from his dying uncle, only to discover that money in America comes with a price that cannot be paid in dollars. The fortune-seekers circle like vultures: business partners, social climbers, and the merely desperate, all hungry for a piece of the dying man's empire. But the real corruption runs deeper than greed. James paints a portrait of wealth so enormous it becomes its own kind of prison, a tower of ivory built on exploitation and shadowed by mortality. The novel pulses with dark energy as it asks what responsibility the inheritor bears for the sins of the fortune that built it. Unfinished and posthumously published in 1917, The Ivory Tower stands as James's furious, bleak meditation on the American dream turned poisonous. It is for readers who want their literature to wound, to interrogate, to refuse easy comfort.
