The Invasion of India

Two and a half millennia ago, a Macedonian king pushed his army beyond every boundary the known world recognized, into a land of elephants and warrior-kings, of philosophies older than Greece itself. This is the record of that collision - not a modern retelling, but the voices of those who were there. John Watson McCrindle gathered and translated the accounts of Greek and Roman historians who followed Alexander eastward, preserving their vivid observations of battles fought in monsoons, of diplomatic encounters between vastly different civilizations, and of a world that changed forever when East met West. The sources gathered here include Arrian, the most reliable of the ancient biographers, and Strabo, whose geography shaped Western understanding of India for centuries. What emerges is not just a military campaign but a profound cultural shock: Greeks encountering yoga-practicing ascetics, war elephants, and cities of staggering wealth. For anyone drawn to the deep past, to the question of how civilizations first touched across vast distances, these compiled testimonies remain indispensable.
