The Inquisition Revealed: In Its Origin, Policy, Cruelties, and History, with Memoirs of Its Victims in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, England, India, and Other Countries

The Inquisition is often reduced to a vague horror in the popular imagination, a byword for religious cruelty that obscures the real human suffering behind it. Thomas Timpson shatters that abstraction by placing victims at the center of his account. This mid-19th century study spans continents and centuries, tracing the Inquisition's machinery of persecution from medieval France through the Spanish Empire to colonial India. Timpson draws on primary sources and firsthand testimonies to reconstruct individual fates: the merchant accused of secret Judaism, the theologian questioned for unorthodox views, the witch held in an Italian dungeon. His argument is clear: religious authority, when unaccountable, becomes a license for atrocity. The book matters now because it refuses to let history's victims disappear into statistics. Timpson writes as a Victorian reformer, yes, but his compassion for the persecuted transcends his era. For readers drawn to dark chapters of human rights violations, for anyone interested in how institutions justify cruelty in the name of God, this remains a bracing and necessary account.
