The Influence of the Stars: A Book of Old World Lore

This 1889 volume captures a moment when astrology, palmistry, and physiognomy were not mere curiosities but earnest disciplines pursued by serious minds. Rosa Baughan presents these "old world" practices not as superstition but as ancient wisdom worthy of revival, offering readers a window into a time when reading the lines of a palm or the configuration of stars seemed as reasonable as consulting a doctor today. The book interweaves three interconnected systems for divining fate and character: the influence of celestial bodies on human affairs, chiromancy (the art of reading palms), and physiognomy (assessing personality through facial features). Baughan argues these methods form a cohesive framework for understanding destiny, a cosmos where the stars, the hand, and the face all speak a language of meaning waiting to be decoded. For readers fascinated by Victoriana, the occult, or the evolution of belief, this book offers an extraordinary glimpse into a vanished worldview where mysticism and rationality were not yet enemies.
