The Illustrators of Montmartre

The gaslit streets of Belle Époque Montmartre. The smoky cabarets of the Rue de Rochechouart. The poster-sized advertisements for Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir that stopped passersby in their tracks. This is the world Frank L. Emanuel captures in his intimate study of the artists who defined visual culture in Parisian bohemian society at its most electrifying. The book focuses on the revolutionary work of Théophile Steinlen, whose drawings of Montmartre's working class and café society possessed an empathy and vigor that influenced generations of artists. Also examined is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose posters and lithographs captured the decadent nightlife of fin-de-siècle Paris with an unflinching eye and a bold, flattened style that changed the course of illustration forever. Emanuel places these artists within the broader context of Montmartre's artistic community, exploring how the district's cabarets, theaters, and print shops became incubators for a revolutionary visual language. This book is for art historians, illustration enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever been seduced by the romantic myth of Parisian bohemia. It offers a privileged window into a world where art lived in the streets, where a poster could make your reputation overnight, and where the line between high art and popular culture did not exist.
