The Hundred, and Other Stories

A hundred dolls, destined for children who have never owned one. This is the strange, tender heart at the center of Gertrude Hall Brownell's collection: a series of vignettes that peer into the lives of the comfortable and the unseen. The title story follows Mrs. Darling and her lady's maid Mrs. Bonnet as they prepare these hundred dolls for distribution to the poor, revealing the peculiar intimacy between mistress and servant, and the peculiar distance between giving and receiving. Written in the late 19th century with a quiet, observant eye, Brownell captures the texture of polite society and its blind spots, the rituals of childhood, and the small moments where compassion and condescension blur. These are stories that notice what others overlook: the loneliness behind a nursery door, the hierarchies hidden within households, the way innocence exists alongside (and often because of) privilege. For readers who savor the subtle accumulations of literary fiction, who find meaning in what goes unsaid.
