The House We Live In; or, The Making of the Body

In an era before interactive anatomy apps and animated health documentaries, Vesta J. Farnsworth offered children something radical: a working model of the human body rendered in brick and mortar, pipes and plaster. The House We Live In transforms the growing child into a skilled architect of their own flesh, teaching them that bones are walls, that blood flows through pipes, and that the brain is the management office coordinating it all. This 1920s educational manual, written for mothers to read aloud to their children, weaves together hard science and soft moralizing in a way that now reads as both charmingly earnest and surprisingly sophisticated. Farnsworth understood that teaching a child to respect their body requires first making that body intelligible to them, then connecting knowledge to responsibility. The final sections on diet, cleanliness, and exercise feel less like Victorian scolding and more like an early draft of modern wellness culture. For readers curious about how earlier generations conceived of bodily autonomy, or for parents seeking a window into early health pedagogy, this book is a small time capsule of earnest, practical wisdom.
