The History of the Thirteen Colonies of North America 1497-1763

Before there was a United States, there was a continent of competing empires. Jeffery's account traces the messy, violent, fascinating story of how European powers carved out their places in North America, from John Cabot's voyages in 1497 through the dramatic year of 1763 when France ceded its continental holdings to Britain. What distinguishes this work is its ambition: rather than telling the story solely from England's perspective, Jeffery treats the entire continent as a stage where Spanish, French, Dutch, and Swedish colonists also played crucial roles. The narrative builds methodically through exploration, settlement, colonial wars, and the growing tensions between the British crown and its American subjects. Jeffery writes with the conviction that understanding the colonial period requires seeing it through North American eyes rather than European ones. The result is a work that feels surprisingly modern in its scope, even as it maintains an early 20th-century scholarly voice. For readers who want to understand the deep historical roots of the continent's formation, this remains a compelling starting point.
