The History of the 51st (highland) Division 1914-1918

This is history written from inside the inferno. F.W. Bewsher, a Brigade Major who lived through every page, chronicles the 51st (Highland) Division from their formation through the bloodiest years of the Great War. We follow these Scottish soldiers from initial training in Bedford, through the grim arithmetic of the Western Front, into battles that would carve their names into military legend. Bewsher doesn't spare us the mundane horrors: equipment shortages that turned soldiers into targets, disease that killed as efficiently as shells, the grinding exhaustion of trench warfare. Yet what emerges most powerfully is the bond between men, and between soldiers and the civilians who fed their hope. This isn't distant military analysis. It's the account of someone who slept in the same mud, who knew men by name rather than number. Written just three years after the armistice, when memory still burned fresh, this remains the essential record of a division that never broke, even when the world tried to break them.
