The History of Signboards, from the Earliest Times to the Present Day

Long before street numbers existed, every shop spoke in pictures. A lion rampant meant a butcher. Three golden balls marked a pawnbroker. A painted boot told travelers where to find a cobbler, while a shimmering gilt goblet promised good drink. Larwood's affectionate history traces these visual languages from Roman tavern markers through medieval guild emblems to the cluttered, colorful streets of Victorian London, where signboards hung like a vast, wandering art gallery across the city. He catalogs not just what the signs depicted, but why: how illiterate customers navigated by symbols, how competitive tradesmen vied for the most elaborate carvings, how certain emblems became hereditary trademarks passed down through generations of shopkeeping families. The book brims with forgotten anecdotes and the odd specifics that make history alive: the guild regulations that once governed what colors a mercer could display, the royal patents that granted certain symbols exclusive meaning, the slow disappearance of this entire visual vocabulary as literacy rose and numbered streets replaced the old system. It is, ultimately, a meditation on how a civilization speaks to itself before it learns to read.
