The History and Antiquities of the Doric Race, Vol. 2 of 2

Karl Otfried Müller was the kind of scholar who died in the field, literally - succumbing to illness in Greece during an archaeological expedition in 1840. This second volume of his monumental study picks up where the first left off: a sweeping examination of Doric political institutions, from monetary systems and taxation to the constitutional architecture that made Sparta the most distinctive polis in the Greek world. Müller contrasts the Dorians' emphasis on collective moral unity with the individualism of other Greek states, making an argument that still resonates through political philosophy. But this is no dry institutional history. Müller also paints daily Doric life in vivid detail: how women were treated, how marriages were arranged, how children were educated, what people wore, how their homes were built. The final section turns to culture - music, lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy - revealing a people often stereotyped as militaristic to be sophisticated creators of art. Originally published in German in 1824 and revised for this 1830 English translation, this landmark work shaped how generations have understood ancient Greece. It remains essential reading for anyone who wants to move beyond Athens and encounter the other Greek civilization that shaped the Western imagination.
