The Highland Bagpipe: Its History, Literature, and Music: With Some Account of the Traditions, Superstitions, and Anecdotes Relating to the Instrument and Its Tunes
1901
Before the helicopter and the machine gun, before radio and recorded music, there was only the skirl of the pipes - and in Scotland, that sound carried meanings that outsiders could barely fathom. W.L. Manson's 1901 masterpiece captures the Highland bagpipe not as a mere musical instrument but as a living artifact of clan loyalty, martial courage, and something older still: a bridge between the mortal world and the realm of Scottish myth. The book traces the instrument from its uncertain origins through its indispensable role on battlefield and in border skirmish, where the bagpipe's穿透力 carried commands across chaotic terrain and its penetrating wail terrified enemies who believed (with good reason) that no army played so fierce a march. But Manson ventures further, into the strange territory of tradition and superstition that surrounded pipers and their tunes: the belief that certain pibrocks could raise the dead, that the instrument's voice could call forth the Sìthichean, that some tunes belonged to specific clans with_taboo against casual performance. This is a book written when the old Scotland still breathed, when the last of the great hereditary pipers could still be interviewed, when memory of the pre-Culloden world had not yet faded into mere history.
