The Hero of the Filipinos: The Story of José Rizal, Poet, Patriot and Martyr

This vivid 1924 biography traces the making of a revolutionary mind. Charles Edward Russell opens with José Rizal's father enduring humiliations at the hands of Spanish authorities, showing how a child's witness of injustice became the seed of defiance. The book follows Rizal from the oppressed streets of Calamba to the intellectual salons of Europe, revealing how his mastery of multiple languages, his poetry, and his novels all served one purpose: waking his people to their own dignity. Russell portrays not a born martyr but a brilliant reformist who believed ideas could defeat guns, until colonial fear proved him tragically wrong. The final chapters chronicle Rizal's capture, his show trial, and his execution by firing squad in 1896, transforming a controversial writer into an immortal symbol of Filipino resistance. This book endures because it captures the precise moment when literature became a revolutionary act, and when a poet's death birthed a nation.
