The Haunted Hour: An Anthology

An anthology compiled in the early 20th century, The Haunted Hour gathers poems that treat ghosts not as horrors but as the returned, spirits who cannot quite leave, whose longing mirrors our own. The collection opens on All Souls' Night, that liminal evening when the boundary between the living and the dead grows thin, and from there moves through grief's many faces: the widow who still sets a place at the table, the lover who visits in dreams, the child who does not understand why Mama won't answer. The poems vary in texture from quiet dread to raw anguish, from the soft persuasion of a幽灵 to the terrible certainty of one who will not rest. Yet throughout runs a current of tenderness troubled by doubt, these are not ghost stories but ghost questions, investigations into the uncomfortable space between remembering and believing. For readers who have ever whispered to the absent, who have felt the dead as much as mourned them, this collection offers the peculiar solace of company in one's haunting.
