The Harmonicon. Part the First

The Harmonicon opens a window into the feverish world of early 19th-century music, when critics were just beginning to shape the canon of who would be remembered and who would fade into obscurity. This first volume gathers essays, biographical memoirs, and correspondence that together form a passionate defense of musical merit, none more poignant than its extended portrait of Vincenzo Righini, an Italian composer whose gifts far outstripped his contemporary fame. The text captures a moment when music criticism was finding its teeth, no longer content to simply praise the established but actively arguing for the overlooked and the deserving. Here, the business of art and the politics of recognition are laid bare: the struggles of composers across Europe to be heard, the evolving standards by which talent was judged, and the fierce debates over what constituted genuine musical achievement. For anyone curious about how the Western musical tradition was actively constructed in its formative decades, these pages offer not mere historical record but a vivid slice of cultural warfare fought in salons and periodicals.
