The Great North-Western Conspiracy in All Its Startling Details

In 1864, a military tribunal peeled back the curtain on a terrifying conspiracy. Northerners discovered that southern sympathizers had built a shadow network across the Midwest, calling themselves the Sons of Liberty, with tens of thousands of members plotting sabotage, armed rebellion, and assassination from within Union territory. I. Winslow Ayer, drawing on trial transcripts and witness testimony, reconstructs this alarming plot in granular, unsettling detail: the secret meetings in farmhouses and hotel rooms, the coded communications, the plans to burn cities and free Confederate prisoners. The book captures a Union paranoid about enemies within its own borders, its author genuinely shaken by the scale of treachery he uncovered. This is not history written in hindsight but a contemporary account, still raw with disbelief that such a web of conspiracy could flourish among fellow Americans. For readers interested in Civil War America beyond the battles, in the shadow wars and internal tensions that nearly fractured the Union from within, Ayer's account remains an essential, unsettling primary source.
