The Grateful Elephant: And Other Stories Translated from the Pāli

The Grateful Elephant: And Other Stories, translated by Eugene Watson Burlingame and first published in 1923, is a collection of twenty-six Buddhist parables drawn from the Pāli texts. These stories convey moral and religious lessons, focusing on themes such as gratitude, compassion, and the consequences of ingratitude. The titular tale features an elephant who, after being helped by carpenters, dedicates his life to aiding them in return, illustrating the virtues of loyalty and selflessness. This collection serves as a rich source of ethical insights attributed to the Buddha, reflecting on kindness and the recognition of good deeds.
