The Grasshopper Stories

In the tradition of the finest early childhood literature, this 1912 collection offers something vanishingly rare: wisdom delivered without a hint of condescension. The grasshopper who guides young Billy through his daily trials is no sermonizing adult in disguise, but a creature of genuine oddness and gentle humor who somehow makes honesty feel like an adventure rather than a duty. Each brief tale finds Billy at a small crossroads: a broken cup, an ant struggling with a burden, a piece of lost worsted belonging to his teacher. These are not the stuff of dramatic adventure, but they are exactly the moments where character is forged. The grasshopper appears at the right moment, not to lecture but to ask the right question, and Billy discovers that doing the right thing feels better than the easy thing. The lessons unfold with a light touch that never condescends to young readers. These stories have outlasted their era for a reason. They possess that rare quality of feeling both utterly of their time and surprisingly fresh, a testament to how completely Leavitt understood her young audience. Perfect for bedtime reading or classroom sharing, The Grasshopper Stories remembers what contemporary children's literature sometimes forgets: that moral growth can be gentle, that wisdom can wear a funny hat, and that a very small bug can teach a boy how to be big.
