The Gold Coast Regiment in the East African Campaign

Sir Hugh Clifford served as Governor of the Gold Coast during World War I, and in this vivid account, published just a year after the armistice, he chronicles the remarkable campaigns of the Gold Coast Regiment across East Africa. From their swift deployment to Togoland and the Kameruns, through the grueling voyage to Dar-es-Salaam, Clifford details their advance against German forces commanded by the legendary General Von Lettow-Vorbeck. The narrative captures key engagements at Kikirunga Hill, the Kilwa area, the Lower Rufiji Valley, and the long pursuit through Portuguese East Africa. Written by a man who witnessed these events firsthand, the account preserves not just military maneuvers but the spirit, endurance, and bravery of soldiers drawn from the Gold Coast. The book stands as an essential record of African troops in the Great War, their contributions too often diminished in mainstream histories. It endures for anyone seeking to understand the full scope of World War I beyond European battlefields, and the critical role West African soldiers played in shaping the war's outcome.
