The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No. 372, February 12, 1887

A vivid snapshot of Victorian girlhood, this 1887 issue of The Girl's Own Paper offers a window into the dreams, duties, and dilemmas faced by young women of the late 19th century. Within its pages, readers encounter short stories of courage and moral fortitude, historical tales set against significant events, practical articles on domestic arts, puzzles, and illustrations that together paint a portrait of respectable middle-class girlhood. The magazine functioned as both entertainment and moral instruction, shaping the values and aspirations of generations of British girls. What makes this artifact fascinating today is not merely its historical age but what it reveals about the contradictory pressures placed on Victorian women: to be both brave and modest, ambitious yet domestic, learned but not too learned. For historians of gender, scholars of periodical culture, and anyone curious about the invisible scaffolding that shaped earlier generations, this issue serves as a surprisingly engaging time capsule.
