The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No. 365, December 25, 1886

A Christmas issue from 1886, this periodical opens a window into the lives of Victorian England's young women. The Girl's Own Paper was devoured weekly by thousands of girls hungry for stories, poetry, and the latest advice on everything from dressmaking to moral fortitude. This December edition delivers exactly what its readers craved: festive tales of charity and family reunion, verses about winter's chill, and thoughtful essays on duty, love, and the particular virtues expected of young ladies navigating the transition from girlhood to adulthood. Here you will find the romances and ruminations that kept Victorian girls reading by candlelight, their hearts fluttering at the same words that once made your great-great-grandmother blush. It's a fascinating artifact, revealing both what has changed and what remains curiously constant about a young woman's hopes and anxieties.
