The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No. 363, December 11, 1886

In December 1886, British girls up and down the country would have found this issue on their drawing-room tables. The Girl's Own Paper was the period's most popular weekly for young women, and this particular number captures a specific moment in Victorian girlhood: a meditation on the Elgin Marbles in the British Museum, short stories about duty and desire, patterns for needlework, and gentle moral instruction disguised as entertainment. Reading it now feels like stepping into another century's sitting room, where a daughter's reading material was carefully curated to shape her character. The magazine spoke to girls who would become wives, mothers, and educators, offering them both practical skills and imaginative escapes. For historians of gender and literature, it's a primary source; for readers, it's a window into how another era understood what girls should know, want, and become.
