The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No. 362, December 4, 1886

This December 1886 issue of The Girl's Own Paper offers a vivid portal into the intellectual world of Victorian young women. Published by the Religious Tract Society for just one penny, this weekly story paper delivered exactly what its readership craved: escapist fiction alongside practical education, moral poetry alongside fashion plates and advice on everything from household management to personal conduct. The pages breathe with voices rarely heard in mainstream literature, providing an essential outlet for women's writing during an era when such opportunities were scarce. Here, readers found stories of adventure and romance, articles that broadened their understanding of the world, and columns that addressed their specific anxieties and aspirations. For historians and literature lovers alike, this periodical illuminates the complex inner lives of Victorian girls and young women, revealing them to be far more intellectually curious and culturally engaged than popular stereotypes suggest. It stands as a testament to the power of print to shape and reflect the minds of its era.
