The Getting of Wisdom

Laura Rambotham, a spirited twelve-year-old from rural Victoria, is thrust into the rigid, class-conscious world of a prestigious Melbourne ladies' college. Away from her humble, homespun origins, she navigates a labyrinth of social snobbery, academic pressures, and the bewildering expectations of her wealthier peers. As she grapples with the shame of her background and the allure of conformity, Laura learns to perform, to lie, and to craft a persona that might allow her to survive, all while a nascent artistic sensibility flickers within her, at odds with the school's stifling conventions. This is a story of a young woman's fraught journey through the hypocrisy of late 19th-century Australian society, where the 'getting of wisdom' is less about genuine enlightenment and more about the art of social masquerade.
