The German Secret Service in America 1914-1918

This book reads like a trench-coated spy thriller, except every word was written as the drama unfolded. John Price Jones, writing in 1918 with access to governmental sources, lays bare the sprawling German intelligence apparatus that operated on American soil in the years before the US entered the Great War. The network was staggering in its ambition: Ambassador Count Johann von Bernstorff oversaw a diplomatic cover for operations run by operatives like Captain Franz von Papen and Dr. Heinrich Albert, who cultivated industrial spies, funded pro-German publications, and plotted acts of sabotage against American munition factories supplying the Allies. Jones documents the famous Black Tom explosion in 1916, the weaponizing of German-American communities, and the elaborate schemes to keep America neutral or, failing that, paralyzed. What elevates this beyond period propaganda is Jones's forensic detail. He names names, traces money flows, and reconstructs the organizational structure of an enemy within. The result is both a historical document of the espionage landscape that pushed America toward war, and a reminder that foreign intelligence operations on American soil are not a modern invention.
