Translated by Francis Adams
Here are the actual words of the man who first asked physicians to abandon magic and observe their patients instead. This 1849 translation gathers the authentic treatises of Hippocrates, the Greek physician whose revolution in medical thought still echoes in every examination room. Within these pages lies the famous oath that has bound physicians for twenty-five centuries, along with works on diagnosis, diet, surgery, and the mysterious humors that Hippocrates believed governed human health. Adams provides extensive commentary that situates these ancient texts within their historical moment while revealing how remarkably forward-thinking their author was: he insisted on thorough patient observation, understood that environment and lifestyle shaped illness, and trusted the body's capacity to heal itself. This is not a medical textbook but a portal into the birth of rational healing, the moment when medicine stopped being prayer and started being inquiry. Readers with interest in classical studies, medical history, or the origins of Western thought will find here a document of unparalleled significance.
