The Gardens of the Sun

The Gardens of the Sun

F. W. Burbidge

Travel & Geography, History

In the 1870s, a young British naturalist named F.W. Burbidge ventured into the heart of Borneo and the Sulu Archipelago, and what he found there rewrote the botanical imagination of Europe. This is his journal: a vivid, often bewildering account of swamps that seemed designed by fantasy, mountains no European had ever climbed, and forests where orchids the size of dinner plates grew wild on every tree. Burbidge hunted orchids for English conservatories, charted the ranges of birds whose names existed only in local languages, and watched orangutans swing through canopies that had never seen a Western face. But this is not merely a catalog of specimens. It is a portrait of a place on the edge of transformation, where Sultanates still held power, where headhunters were a recent memory, and where the first whispers of colonial annexation were beginning to stir. Burbidge writes with the wide-eyed wonder of a man who understands he is witnessing something vanishing. More than a century later, his journal reads like a love letter to a world that has largely disappeared.
